Grants to Artists

Can individual artists apply for this grant?
No, there are no unsolicited applications from individuals. The Grants to Artists program is by nomination only. However, some individuals may be eligible to apply for an Emergency Grant if appropriate (see below).

Can I nominate an individual for a grant?
No. FCA invites knowledgeable people across the different artistic disciplines to serve as nominators. The nominators change each year. Unsolicited nominations are not accepted.

 

Grants to Organizations

Who can apply?
Organizations that exhibit or present the work of artists making work of an experimental or contemporary nature may apply, as well as those that offer professional services to artists. To gain a sense of the kinds of programs supported by FCA, you may view a list of past recipients or link to their websites.

Is there a deadline for applications for Organizations?
The Grants to Organizations program deadline is June 1. Proposals are not considered at other times of the year.

When are announcements made?
Grants to Organizations are announced in August.

Are there geographical restrictions to FCA's Grants to Organizations program?
Grants are restricted to not-for-profit organizations operating in the United States.

Our organization is focused on arts education. Can we apply for a grant?
No. FCA does not provide support for educational programs and services.

We are a performance group. Can we apply for a grant?   
No. Only presenting and service organizations may apply. Performance groups, collectives and ensembles are not eligible.

How may I obtain an application form?

Emergency Grants

Is there a deadline for applications?
Requests for immediate support are considered on a rolling basis throughout the year. There is no deadline.

How long will it take before I get a response?
FCA is able to respond to most inquiries within two to three weeks.

Can I re-apply?
Once a proposal has been reviewed by the committee, it cannot be re-submitted.  Successful applicants must wait three years before approaching FCA again for emergency funding.

I am working on a specific project. Can I apply for a grant to fund the project?
FCA does not offer general project support. Emergency Grants are intended for urgent situations related to a particular project close to completion with committed exhibition or performance dates, or a sudden opportunity to present work to the public.

Can students apply for a grant?
Emergency Grants does not offer assistance to graduate, undergraduate or high school students currently enrolled in a degree program. 

May I apply for a conference, symposium, workshop or training opportunity?
Requests for educational programs, professional training, workshops, symposiums or conferences are not eligible.

I have been invited to participate in a residency program.  May I request funds to assist with travel, accommodations and other related expenses?
FCA does not provide support for residency programs.

Can artists living outside of the United States apply for a grant?
No, Emergency Grants are restricted to artists who are US citizens or permanent residents and are currently living in the United States.

I have been awarded an Emergency Grant in the past. How soon can I reapply?
Successful applicants must wait three years before reapplying to the Emergency Grants program. A maximum of two awards may be given during an applicant's lifetime: if two awards have been granted, applicants cannot apply again to the program.

Are all eligible opportunities funded?
No, funding is competitive. Unfortunately, requests for emergency support significantly exceed the funds available for this program, and therefore FCA is not able to fund all eligible requests.
